兩位年輕的朋友anne和jane，都只有十幾歲，正在安排周末的活動。anne想約jane到海灘去玩，不過她首先要知道jane有沒有空。

anne: jane, are you doing anything on the weekend?

jane: well, i have to do the shopping on saturday morning.

anne: oh, well, what're you doing on saturday afternoon?

jane: sorry, i'm tied up on saturday afternoon, too.

anne: well, have you got anything on on sunday?

jane: i've got something on on sunday morning, i'm afraid, but i'm free

in the afternoon.

anne: good. well, why don't we go to the beach?

jane: great idea!

這對澳大利亞人來說，周末是比較重要的。許多澳大利亞人的工作日是星期一到星期五，周末由自己支配，譬如在星期六上午買買東西，參加或者觀看體育比賽，看望親友，到娛樂場所消遺消遣等。

**澳大利亞一種著名的鳥，叫的聲音象人的笑聲一樣。

因為有事不能參加某項社交活動，需要向人解釋，一般就用上面介紹的有關用語。而很少說i'm busy。也很少說i've got an appointment。busy只用于說明工作情況，appointment只用于與醫生、牙科醫生、上級等約會，不用于一般的社交活動。

making arrangements to meet a friend與一位朋友約會

1. finding out if your friend is free 問對方是否有空

a) are you free (next weekend/this evening/etc.)?

-yes，i am.

-no, i've got something on, i'm afraid.

-well, i'm tied up in the morning but i'm free in the afternoon.

b) are you doing anything (on the weekend/tonight/etc.)?

-no，i'm not.

-yes, i've got something on then.

-well, i've got to do the shopping (on saturday morning) but i'm not doing anything special(on sunday).

c) what're you doing (this evening/on saturday/etc.)?

-nothing special.

nothing at the moment.

- i've got to go to my aunt's place(on saturday).

d) have you got anything on (on sunday)?

- no (i haven't).

- i'm tied up all day, i'm afraid.

注意：

非正式地提到將來的事情，特別是在社交活動中與人約會，一般用現在時，尤其是現在進行時，例如：

i'm doing the shopping on saturday morning.

i've got 80mething on on sunday morning: on用了兩次，在句中的作用不同：(a)第一個on是這一句主要成分i've got something on的一部分。(b)第二個on是表明時間的短語on sunday morning的一部分。

2. making detailed arrange-ments 具體安排約會

a)確定具體活動、具體地方

why don't we (go .../meet at…/visit/play .../have a party)? 用于非正式談話，提出建議。

have you ever been to…? 用現在完成時， 因為這是指到現在為止過去整個時間內發生過的事情，肯定的答復可以是：

yes，i have.(不說具體時間)

yes，i went there last year.(用簡單過去時+具體時間。)

如果你知道你的朋友去過某地，可以用簡單過去時問問題，例如：

where did you go?

when did you go there?

what did you do?

what did you see?

did you see…?

how long did you stay…?

let's (go to .../meet at…)和對方商量到什么地方去，提出一個意見，為了征得對方同意，可以用這個句式。let's……的前面往往加then或well。

b)確定見面的地點和時間

where will i meet you?

at my place/at the station/etc.

what time?

one o'clock/three o'clock/etc.

注意：

問句和答句往往不用完整句;

商量具體安排時常用will，但在此以 前不常用will。在澳大利亞，提問時一般用will i，很少用shall i。

conversational devices

a) i'm afraid.

i'm afraid i'm tied up on sunday.

i'm tied up on sunday, i'm afraid.

i'm afraid在這里沒有“我害怕”的. 意思，只是比較客氣地說明自己對某事感到遺憾、抱歉。這個短語在會話時常用。

b) well有兩種用法：

i)使說話的人有時間考慮如何回答，相當于漢語里的“嗯”“‘嗯-”。(參看dialogue 的第一句話。)

ii)意思是：這樣說來;那么。(參看dialogue 1，anne的最后一句話。)

注意：oh well…的意思同(ii)，但通常有對目前情況認可，表示愿意接受的含意。

注意聽廣播中的下列句子，聽完廣播后再練習：

a)凡問句的疑問詞以wh開頭的，此問句用降調。

when did he go?

where will we meet?

b) are的弱化形式是快讀的[?]。

c)英語國家的人通常不把下面標出的輔音全部讀出來：next saturday而往往說：[?nek(s) ?s?t?dei]

第四部分：練習

1.問你的朋友第三部分第一點里的問題，請對方按照實際情艦回答，然后由你朋友問，你回答。

2.和你朋友一起朗讀開頭的三小段對話，模仿播音員的節奏和語調。問和答由你和你朋友交替進行。
