當說話人認為句子所述的是不真實的或極少有可能發生或存在的情況時。從句虛擬語氣動詞時態的形式如下:

(1)如果從句表示與現在事實相反,謂語動詞用一般過去時。(2)從句表示與過去事實相反,謂語動詞用“had+過去分詞”。(3)從句表示與將來事實相反,謂語動詞用“would/could/might+動詞原型 suggest 在虛擬語氣中的用法: 一想要(desire)二寧愿(prefer)三命令(d)四建議(advise, suggest, propose)五要求(demand, require, request, desire, insist)無論主句謂語動詞為何種時態,從句的謂語動詞都用:“should + 動詞原形”或只用“動詞原形”。

注:suggest意為“建議”才用虛擬語氣,意為“暗示”則不用虛擬語氣。例句:his face suggests that he looks worried.他的表情暗含著他很擔心。這個句子本身是事實,因此它就沒有用到虛擬語氣 suggestion等詞在虛擬語氣中的用法:

當某些表示建議、請求、命令等主觀意向的名詞作主語時,其后的表語從句或同位語從句需用虛擬語氣,其表達形式為should +動詞原形或直接用動詞原形。這類名詞常見的有:

demand(要求), desire(請求),requirement(要求)advice(勸告), recommendation(建議),suggestion(建議)order(命令)proposal(計劃), recommendation等。例:

we are all for your proposal that the discussion be put off.我們都贊成你提出的將討論延期的建議。

the suggestion that the mayor present the prizes was accepted by everyone.由市長頒發獎金的建議被每個人接受。
